The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade has voiced strong opposition to Washington's proposed new tariffs on Chinese goods, reports the Hong Kong Standard.
The council said the Chinese business community is dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to the US plan to impose additional 12.5 per cent tariffs. The measures follow a Section 301 probe alleging forced labour in supply chains, an assertion rejected by trading partners.
The Trump administration has proposed tariffs of 10 per cent or 12.5 per cent on imports from 60 countries. The council said the move applies unilateral US rules to other economies and deviates from multilateral trading system principles.
CCPIT urged Washington to stop generalising and abusing trade restrictions and to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation. It called for joint efforts to maintain stability in global industrial and supply chains.
The council added it would continue to support Chinese enterprises in strengthening compliance frameworks and risk management capabilities to cope with external challenges.
