HK Chief Executive hails transport, logistics sectors at HAFFA dinner

HONG KONG's Chief Executive CY Leung was the special guest at the annual gala dinner of the Hongkong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics Limited (HAFFA) held at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Centre (KITEC).

This marked the first time the leader of the Hong Kong administration attended the event in the 48-year history of HAFFA.

The Chief Executive delivered the keynote speech to 700 HAFFA members and guests, and began by noting the significance of the industry's contribution to the Hong Kong economy, both in terms of GDP and employment.

Mr Leung highlighted the enormous opportunities presented by the continued economic development of the mainland, particularly its demand for high-end consumer goods which has led to an increase in the third-party logistics services sector in Hong Kong.

Mr Leung also said factors contributing to the establishment of regional distribution centres in Hong Kong by overseas companies was due to location, efficient transportation network and tax policy, as well as experienced logistics professionals providing tailor-made and cost-effective integrated services.

Mr Leung also stressed the vital importance of training. He welcomed the opening of the HAFFA training school and endorsed the value of the association's efforts in the area of training, crucial to ensuring the industry improves and sustains its competitiveness.

He also pledged the support of the government in areas such as allocation of land for logistics operations and transport infrastructure development, citing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, and proposed third runway as presenting new opportunities to the industry.

HAFFA chairman Paul Tsui highlighted the association's strengths when overcoming challenges and addressed its forward-thinking strategy to ensure a healthy future and the industry's ability to take advantage of opportunities.

In addition to the chief executive, the evening was attended by a number of distinguished guests, including Secretary for Transport and Housing Anthony Cheung, Legislative Councilor Frankie Yick Chi-Ming and Norman Lo, director general of civil aviation.
