In detail, dry cargo for both import and export amounted to 30.63 million tons, and the liquid bulk cargo for import and export summed up to 11.22 million tons, compared to 36.64 million tons and 15.07 million tons, respectively, during the previous financial year 2021-22.
Breaking down the figures, the import cargo volume at the end of FY 2022-23 stood at 29.08 million tons, a decline from 35.54 million tons in FY 2021-22. Similarly, the export cargo handled at the port during FY 2022-23 was 12.78 million tons, down from 16.17 million tons in FY 2021-22.
Additionally, there has been a recent development at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), where they have taken control of the Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) as the 21-year agreement for PICT expired on June 17.
The administrative affairs of PICT will now be under the control of Karachi Port Trust for 13 days.
A significant board meeting, headed by the chairman of Karachi Port Trust, was convened to address this matter, and a group from Abu Dhabi has expressed interest in taking over PICT.
