China ports handle 190.9 million TEU in H1, up 8.3pc

 THE container throughput of Chinese ports was 190.9 million TEU from January to July 2024, a year on year increase of 8.3 per cent, reports London's Port Technology International.


In July, the container throughput of Shanghai Port was 4.84 million TEU, a year-on-year increase of 15.1 per cent.

Ningbo Zhoushan Port also saw steady growth in container volumes, reaching 3.35 million TEU, which marks an increase of 5.3 per cent.

The Port of Shanghai moved the most containers in the first seven months of the year, recording a throughput of 30.35 million, an 8.6 per cent increase.

Beibu Gulf Ports, on the other hand, moved the least containers out of the listed ports despite achieving the highest percentage growth.

Meanwhile, the Port of Xiamen was the only port to have recorded a drop in performance, having handled 6.86 million TEU, a 3.3 per cent drop.

In terms of container freight rates, the average value of the Ningbo Containerised Freight Index (NCFI) was 2384.5 points in August 2024, a month-to-month decrease of 12.4 per cent and a year-on-year increase of 224.2 per cent.

Among the 21 routes, the freight index of three routes increased, and the freight index of 18 routes fell.
