China downplays rare earth tensions with Europe

RARE earth exports should not be a point of contention between China and Europe, China's foreign minister stated, reports Beijing's Global Times.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said European companies' needs will be met if export procedures are followed.

He called export controls on dual-use goods a sovereign right aligned with international rules.

China has introduced a "fast track" mechanism for European enterprises.

Mr Wang accused some actors of stirring the issue for political purposes.
