Greek shipping has global lead with 5,691 ships

Greece has retained its position as the world's largest shipowning nation in 202-25, controlling 5,691 vessels and 20 per cent of global deadweight tonnage, reports the Los Angeles Greek Reporter.

The Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) said the fleet also accounts for 61 per cent of EU capacity, underpinning energy, food and supply chain security. In 2024, Greek-owned ships called at 176 countries.

UGS president Melina Travlos highlighted the industry's role in defending freedom of navigation and leading the sector's green transition. The Greek fleet is the world's largest alternative-fuel-capable and SOx scrubber-fitted fleet, with above-average adoption of advanced environmental technologies.
