Human remains have been discovered aboard the Thai-flagged cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, which was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz last month, the ship's owner said, reported Athens' Safety4Sea.

The vessel was struck by two projectiles of unknown origin while sailing from Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi to Kandla Port in India. The attack damaged the engine room and sparked a fire, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

Thai media reported that of the 23 crew members, 20 were rescued and taken to Oman, while three remained missing, believed trapped in the engine compartment. Nearly a month later, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that search teams found human remains aboard the vessel.

Officials said the identities of the deceased could not yet be verified due to extensive fire damage and flooding in the engine room. Precious Shipping, the vessel's operator, confirmed remains were located but could not specify the number of individuals.

Families of the missing crew have been notified of the discovery. The incident follows another attack on a vessel a day later, which killed one crew member, prompting maritime firm Safesea to call for an independent international investigation.
