APM Terminals, working with Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and Africa Global Logistics, has advanced the expansion of Tema Port, aiming to boost annual capacity to nearly 3 million TEU, reports Mumbai's Logistics Update Africa.
The company said Phases 1 and 2 of the expansion have been commissioned, strengthening the port's role as a West Africa trade hub. The project is designed to improve scale, efficiency and reliability to meet rising trade demand.
At Meridian Port Services' Terminal 3, new equipment has been deployed, including 16 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes and three ship-to-shore cranes. These additions are expected to accelerate cargo handling and support the port's expanded throughput.
The increased capacity positions Tema as a key logistics hub, enabling faster cargo flows and more predictable trade schedules. The development is also expected to support industrial growth by improving supply chain connectivity for regional and international markets.
APM Terminals said such investments are critical for building resilient supply chains and accommodating future trade growth. The expansion is seen as a benchmark for long-term port development partnerships, showing how coordinated public and private investment can enhance competitiveness.
