Japan's Defence Ministry has begun examining the possible export of Type 88 surface-to-ship missiles to the Philippines after Manila expressed interest earlier this month, reports Tokyo's NHK World-Japan.
Sources said the ministry is considering transferring missiles from the current Ground Self-Defense Force arsenal, which is being phased out in favour of a new model. Type 88 missiles have a range of more than 100 kilometres and were fired in a live drill staged in the Philippines between April and May with US forces also participating.
The transfer of Abukuma-class destroyer escorts to the Philippines is also under consideration. These vessels are currently operated by the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The Japanese government last month revised its three principles on overseas transfer of defence equipment and related guidelines. The changes allow exports of lethal weapons in principle, removing earlier restrictions that limited outbound shipments to five categories.
