MSC reaps fuel efficiency gains with Jotun's Hull Performance Solutions

NORWAY's Jotun Marine Coatings has announced that Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will apply Jotun's Hull Performance Solutions on a number of its new vessels to help reduce bunker fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

MSC undertook to improve fuel efficiency and worked in close cooperation with Jotun to evaluate hull performance and test the impact of anti-fouling on speed loss, said the Jotun Marine release,

Jotun's SeaQuantum X200 was applied to the 8,772-TEU MSC Adelaide delivered in 2013.

Senior Marine Engineers from MSC have confirmed that initial results on the MSC Adelaide have been encouraging.

"SeaQuantum X200 has shown to be an effective antifouling technology to lower fuel costs and associated carbon emissions, consistent with MSC's commitment to a healthier supply chain," they said.

"We valued the quality of Jotun's technical service during all phases of the project and have since chosen SeaQuantum X200 HPS for a number of other vessels," said the engineers formal conclusion.

Jotun regional sales manager Roberto Multari said MSC has agreed to utilise HPS on 12 vessels including the world largest containership, the 19,224-TEU MSC Oscar.

MSC is a privately owned global shipping founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte with headquarters in Geneva. MSC operates in over 450 offices across more than 150 countries worldwide with over 24,000 employees.

Jotun is one of the world's leading manufacturers of decorative paints, marine, protective and powder coatings. The group has 70 companies and 36 production facilities on all continents and has its head office in Sandefjord, Norway.
