BI-NATIONAL Gateway Terminal, a newly-launched logistics venture, has taken a 20-year lease on a 49-acre site on the edge of one of Lambert St. Louis International Airport's four runways to construct a major cargo handling terminal that aims to focus on trade between the US, Mexico and Latin America.
On completion, the new terminal will serve multimodal cargo needs and be equipped to handle perishables, live animals, high value shipments, express and general cargo.
Bi-National Cargo Terminal's founder Ricardo Nicolopulos said: "Mexico is the third largest trade partner with the USA, and we aim to improve the flow of cargo moving between these two major markets. Ultimately, we intend to provide a link between the Americas and all major world markets.
"In addition to developing the new terminal facilities, we are working closely with the Mexican authorities to introduce fast-track pre-clearance and security functions for exports from the USA.
"Once approved, this pre-clearance system will expedite import traffic into Mexico. Eventually, however, it will also enable Mexico to export by air in a more reliable and efficient manner that will enhance the country's position as a trade partner for the world."
According to the airport's cargo development director David Lancaster, construction of the cargo facility is scheduled to start this summer, and the first phase is expected to be completed within 30 months. The facility will consist of a 500,000-square-feet terminal and one million sq ft of cargo ramp and support infrastructure for its airline customers.
"This expansion will help us to attract new cargo services to the airport and expand upon the region's logistics footprint," said Mr Lancaster.
