SOUTHAMPTON's container terminal operated run by DP World Southampton has started celebrating the start of a new service that will bring some of the world's biggest ships to the port.
The port call is part of the new AE2/Swan service offering faster transit times from Asia and the UK. The service is operated by the 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) using 12 vessels including the world's largest containerships like the Maersk Triple-E's and MSC's 19,224 TEU Oscar Class.
The Mathilde Maersk made its maiden call at the terminal on October 28 while the Emma Maersk was scheduled to call at the port on November 2.
Huge container ships will offer high street retailers and manufacturers some of the fastest transit times from Asia to the UK. They will take just 19 days to sail from their last port of call in Asia to Southampton, the Southern Daily Echo reported.
Southampton is also preparing to welcome the brand new MSC Clara, which will visit the city for the first time in December.
DP World's managing director, Chris Lewis, said: "Retailers depend on swift, slick, efficient and reliable supply chains to bring their goods from all over the world to the shop floor.
"Competitive shipping transit times, combined with Southampton's trademark service, productivity and reliability will provide any customer looking to import or export goods through Southampton with a competitive edge."
DP World owns more than 65 marine terminals across six continents, including new developments underway in India, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
