US funded dredging helps JAXPORT win Asian cargo, which rise 16pc
FLORIDA's JAXPORT has posted a 27 per cent year-on-year increase in container throughput to 634,460 TEU during the first half of its fiscal year. The Jacksonville harbour authority attributed its double-digit growth to the federally funded dredging to 47 feet (14 metres), which makes the it accessible to larger ships from Asia, reported London's Port Technology. JAXPORT, which has enjoyed an annual growth of 21 per cent a year in the last five years, also reported that Asian cargo increase its volume 16 per cent in the first six months of the fiscal 2018, with 209,803 TEU lifted. Puerto Rican volumes have also increased, up 40 per cent to 375,633 TEU from 267,827 during the same time last year, an increase partly due to the increased relief and replacement goods in the wake of the devastation after September's Hurricane Maria.
