Beijing denies Shanghai's 3rd airport will be in Nantong, Jiangsu province
CHINA's transport authorities have denied that the location of the proposed third airport in Shanghai has been confirmed, after local media reported that Nantong, a city in neighbouring Jiangsu province, had been selected. The report from the Shanghai Securities News said that Nantong, which is located 75 miles from Shanghai and already houses one commercial airport, was the winner from a number of candidates, including Kunshan, also in Jiangsu, Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, and Shanghai's Chongming district. However, the Civil Aviation Administration of China denied these claims and said the contest for the new location was still running. Shanghai's two existing airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, processed 112 million passengers in 2017, placing Shanghai among the top five most popular destinations worldwide by air traffic. Caixin reports this figure is expected to almost triple by 2040.
